With farmer’s markets, festivals on the green, movies in the park, concerts, community campouts and other events, Katy has a lot to offer residents and visitors alike.
Katy is located about 30 miles west of downtown Houston — near Houston amenities, but still retaining its family-centered, small-town charm. Plus, Katy is only a 90-minute drive from Gulf Coast beaches, including the many attractions of Galveston Island.
With an average of 208 sunny days a year, Katy offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Nearby is a 2,400-acre conservancy, nature preserves, lakes and ponds, hiking and biking trails, parks and a 25-acre water park.
This beautiful area was once wide-open prairie and the hunting ground of the Karankawa Indian tribes. Settlers began establishing the area in the 1870s and the community was known as Cane Island, named for Cane Island Creek that runs through it. Katy later became a rice farming community — and the town still celebrates their rice background with an annual rice festival.
