Temple lies between Waco and the city that likes to keep things weird in Central Texas.
It’s just 36 miles south of Waco and 67 miles north of Austin, down the I-35 corridor. Temple is, demographically speaking, at the heart of Texas. About 80 percent of the state’s population is within three hours of Temple. The Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio areas are all just a few hours drive away.
Founded as a railroad town, it was originally named Temple Junction by the railroad company, in honor of the railroad’s chief engineer.
Almost 75 square miles in size, there’s always something happening in Temple. Family-friendly events and attractions include the popular Bloomin' Temple Festival, an air show, First Fridays, Family Days, a Jazz Festival, a 5k inflatable obstacle run, father and daughter dances and food festivals.
There are also cultural attractions that include a symphony orchestra, a cultural activities center, a civic theater and numerous museums.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Temple’s Lake Park, 172 acres along the southern shore of Lake Belton, is a great place for swimming, fishing, boating and camping. And just east of the Lake Belton Dam is the Miller Springs Nature Center, with 260 acres ideal for fishing, hiking, biking, picnicking and rock climbing.
