Frequently asked questions about moving electricity service in Texas

Limited time offer

Show all answers

When you enroll in a Reliant electricity plan, you'll get bill credits that are applied to your electricity charges. Single-family homes are eligible for up to $1,000 in bill credits, while multifamily homes, such as apartments, are eligible for $200 in bill credits.

This limited-time offer is available to new Reliant customers and current customers looking to transfer their service to a new address.

Bill credits are applied to your electricity bill over the length of your plan. This can help with your electricity costs over time as you settle in to your new home.

If you take advantage of our 90-day satisfaction guarantee and switch to another electricity plan, you'll no longer be eligible for the remaining bill credits associated with your original plan.

This limited-time offer is only available through September 30, 2026. Be sure to enroll before the deadline to take advantage of available bill credits.

General

You may need a deposit to start electricity service, depending on factors like credit history and the plan you choose. Reliant does offer no-deposit or prepaid options, giving you flexible ways to start service without an upfront payment.

Yes, you can start electricity service before your lease begins if you have access to the property. Setting up service early helps ensure your power is ready on move-in day and allows time to confirm everything is working properly.

You can schedule electricity service up to 60 days before your move‑in or request same‑day service in some areas (availability depends on location, meter status and timing) to compare plans and choose what fits your home.

To start electricity service, you typically need your new address, your move-in date and a valid form of identification. Having this information ready helps speed up the process and ensures your electricity is connected on time.

Renters

Yes. Reliant offers electricity plans designed for apartments in Texas. These plans accommodate lower usage levels and lease terms, making it easier for renters to find an option that fits their lifestyle and budget.

When moving, most renters need to set up utilities like internet and water services. Electricity is also one of the most important and time-sensitive services to arrange before your move-in date to help you avoid delays or interruptions.

You can estimate apartment electricity costs using our Bill Estimator that considers factors like unit size, occupancy and typical energy use. This helps you compare plans and choose one that aligns with your expected monthly budget.

Homeowners

Show all answers

The average Texas home uses about 1,096 kilowatt‑hours (kWh) of electricity per month, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Electricity usage can vary widely based on the size of your home, its location and seasonal changes. Larger homes and heavy A/C use during hot Texas summers can lead to higher electricity consumption, especially during periods of extreme heat.

You can estimate your electricity bill before moving in by using our Bill Estimator that factors in home size, usage patterns and plan type. This helps you compare options and select a plan that fits your expected energy needs.

The best electricity plan for a new home depends on your home’s size, your energy usage and your budget. Comparing plans based on estimated usage can help you choose an option that offers the right balance of flexibility and price.

Texas moving and electricity setup

When moving in Texas, you can start electricity service by comparing plans and scheduling your service to start on or before your move‑in date. With Reliant, you can set this up as early as 60 days in advance to make sure your home's power is ready when you move in. In many Texas locations, same‑day electricity service may also be available if your order is placed early.1

Yes, same day electricity service is available in many Texas locations. To qualify, you typically need to enroll before your utility’s daily cutoff time, and availability can vary based on your address, utility service area, meter type and the time your enrollment is submitted. With Reliant, customers may be able to get electricity connected the same day if the request is placed by 5 p.m. The quickest way to confirm timing is to check same‑day service availability for your specific address.1

In Texas, the deregulated electricity market allows most residents to choose their electricity provider. This means you can compare plans, pricing and features to find an option that fits your needs instead of being automatically assigned a provider.

Yes. Moving is a common time to switch electricity providers. This gives you the opportunity to compare options and select a plan that better fits your new home.

If you don’t set up electricity before moving day, your power may not be ready when you arrive. In some cases, you may need to request same-day service, which depends on availability in your area and the time of your request.
