Fifty miles inland from the Gulf Coast is the scenic town of Richmond, Texas. Located in Fort Bend county, Richmond is a family-friendly suburb in the Houston area.
The town dates back to the very roots of Texas in the 1820’s, when 57 of Stephen F. Austin’s “Old Three Hundred” colonists joined other settlers to establish this area of Southeast Texas.
A log fort was built by a bend in the Brazos River and this fort settlement became known as Fort Bend. The town was established in 1837 and was among the 19 cities first incorporated by the then Republic of Texas.
Today, residents and visitors can get a glimpse into Richmond’s past by visiting the historic downtown area, touring historic homes, and getting hands-on at a 23,000-acre working ranch. The Fort Bend Museum, operated by the Fort Bend Historical Association, also offers the opportunity to step back in time and experience Richmond’s 200-year history.
Richmond festivals and events include historical celebrations such as Texian Market Days, Pecan Harvest Festival, and an annual re-creation of the Runaway Scrape of 1836. Richmond also offers live concerts, a downtown farmer’s market, Chef Fest, and a Chinese Lantern Festival.
There’s always plenty of things to experience in Richmond—and the town is just a short drive from Houston and the city’s many attractions. The rodeo and sporting events at NRG Stadium are only 24 miles away. Just 21 miles away is Brazos Bend State Park, and the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge is 60 miles away.
