A fort where Pecos Bill and regiments of the Buffalo Soldiers were once stationed. Welcome to San Angelo!
San Angelo has a long and fascinating history, beginning in the 1860s, when the Fort Concho Army post was established. The city has been recognized as one of the Top 10 True Western Towns of the Year—for several years in a row. Not only is the city’s Western frontier heritage on display throughout San Angelo—it’s celebrated in the many events throughout the year—including National Cowboy Day, a Buffalo Soldier Heritage Day, cavalry reenactments, a trail ride, jubilee, and the San Angelo Rodeo that’s been around for 88 years.
In addition to the many historical attractions, San Angelo has events and activities for every interest. Drag boat races and wakeboarding competition, ballet and symphony events, live theater and music, plus hiking, horseback riding, art walks and a Downtown Stroll.
One of the best places for San Angelo residents to head to is the nearby San Angelo State Park. The 7,788-acre park has 50 miles of multi-use trails, a monthly bison and Longhorn tour, and a two-mile Dinosaur Trail. There’s also fishing, swimming, boating, camping, geocaching and even animal tracking classes.
