Giving back to the places we call home

In support of first responders and the most vulnerable in Texas, Reliant donated over $1 million to local community relief funds and initiatives that are helping protect frontline workers and those adversely impacted by COVID-19. The donations are part of our community program, Reliant Gives, providing support across the state of Texas and our parent company, NRG Energy, Inc.’s $2 million donation to pandemic relief efforts.

The donations continue to support the following initiatives:

Baylor Scott & White

At the onset of the pandemic, Reliant contributed $100,000 to Baylor Scott & White, Texas’ largest donor-supported hospital system.

  • This funding helped increase MyBSW Health app users from 800,000 to 1.7 million. The app’s “Covid Journey” remote-monitoring feature allows patients diagnosed with COVID-19 to connect to care during quarantine.
  • Additionally, funds supported 50,000 telehealth visits, vital to diagnosing COVID-19 early in the pandemic. This accelerated move to telehealth will benefit patients today and for decades to come.

Houston Methodist Hospital and the Reliant Innovation Fund

Through the Reliant Innovation Fund, we are supporting groundbreaking efforts by Houston Methodist critical care physicians, who are combining engineering and medical expertise.

  • Two Methodist physician-scientists have been awarded a total of $100,000 to fund critical care solutions focusing on brain and lung health related to COVID-19.
  • In addition, the fund awarded a $30,000 grant to fund the CareSense app, which helps COVID-19 patients connect to care after their initial diagnosis.

Created in 2020, the Reliant Innovation Fund supports the Center for Critical Care physician scientists in collaboration with students from the Engineering Medicine (EnMed) program, a unique collaborative endeavor between Houston Methodist and Texas A&M university that allows students to graduate with Medical Doctorates and Masters of Engineering degrees in four years.
