AC and heating make up approximately 42% of your electricity bill2

Use these tips to help save electricity.
  • Replace your air filters at least every 3 months for optimal airflow.
  • Turn your thermostat to “auto” instead of “on” to prevent it from running 24/7.
  • When you are using your AC, raise your thermostat by 4° degrees when you’re away from home for more than 4 hours. When you are using your heater, lower it by 4°.
  • Set your ceiling fan counter-clockwise during summer to create a wind chill effect and feel up to 4° cooler.3 In winter, set your ceiling fan to rotate clockwise to push hot air down.
  • Install a smart thermostat and save up to 15% on your energy usage.4

  • Unplug electronics like coffee makers and microwaves when not in use.
  • Many electronics still use energy even if turned off. Plug your gadgets into a power strip. A simple flip of the switch ensures all the devices are completely off and not draining energy when not in use.

Your water is one of the highest energy user in your home. 
  • Take shorter showers.
  • Put your water heater on a timer to keep it from running when you don't need it.
  • Lower the temperature on your water heater to 120° to help save up to $60 a year.6

When possible, use smaller kitchen appliances like microwaves and toaster ovens to save on energy costs.7
  • Around 90% of the energy washing machines use comes from heating the water. Wash cold and save.

  • Save energy by setting your refrigerator between 35° and 38°F and your freezer to 0°F.

Replacing all of the incandescent bulbs with LEDs in a typical home can save about $3,200 over the life of the LEDs.8
  • Use motion-activated or solar lights outside. They only turn on when necessary, conserving energy.
  • Switch to LED bulbs, which use up to 80% less energy than incandescent bulbs.9
  • Remember to turn off lights when leaving a room.
