Energy Saving Tips | Lighting

If you could light your home using the same amount of brightness for less money, why wouldn’t you give it a shot?

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, today's energy-efficient light bulbs can last up to 25 times longer and use at least 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs. By opting for more energy-efficient light bulbs, you’ll be doing your part to reduce fossil fuel consumption (while saving money on your utility bills). Check out these lighting tips and our other energy-saving tips to make small improvements in your home that could equal big savings.

Light bulbs

Making a few simple adjustments to how you light your home can considerably increase your home's energy efficiency.

  • Replace traditional incandescent light bulbs with ENERGY STAR® LED bulbs — especially recessed lighting, kitchen fixtures and lights operated for more than two hours per day.
  • Remember to turn off lights when leaving a room.
  • Use dimmers at lower light levels to reduce electricity usage.
  • Switch out your old holiday lights with LEDs, which use less energy and generally last much longer.1

Outdoor lighting

Outdoor lights are typically left on for longer periods of time than indoor lights, so upgrading to energy-efficient lighting outside can be a great way to save.

  • Look for ENERGY STAR® lights with a motion sensor and timer or photocell that will automatically turn on at dusk and off at dawn.
  • Take advantage of solar lighting options. They are easy to install, with little to no maintenance required.

LED strips

LED is one of today's most energy-efficient technologies, using up to 80% less energy and lasting up to 25 times longer than traditional incandescent lighting.1 There are several ways to use LED lighting to make your home more energy efficient.

  • Install LED strip lights in your bedroom. You can choose different colors to enhance your mood and decorate your space, all while being energy efficient.
  • LED strip lights are great for the outdoors. Consider adding lighting to a garden or along a sidewalk for added visibility.
  • Use LED strips throughout your home to increase light quality and use less energy.
