Here's your change of address checklist
There are many things to add to your moving checklist on top of the actual packing, cleaning and moving. For instance, you should make sure you budget for the move, transfer your utilities and, finally, change your address.
This page provides a detailed checklist of some of the companies to contact to update your address and why it’s important.
When you move, one of the biggest tasks is making sure to either stop your current utilities and start new ones in your new place or transfer them. The key is to start early. Make a list of your current utility companies, and see if they provide service in your new area. If they do, consider transferring service; if they don’t, you’ll need to find new providers. Use this utility list when moving to your new place:
Already a Reliant customer? Transferring your service is easy. You'll stay locked in to your current plan, and there will be no fee to move your service to your new place. Learn more ›
Inform your insurance carriers of your move so that they can contact you with billing information and other communications. Plus, insurance expenses or coverage might change based on the location of your move. Here are some of the companies you should keep in the know:
From home loans to car loans, student loans and credit card companies, it’s important to update any loan carriers of your move. They will need to know where to contact you for billing and to send any communications pertinent to your loan.
The last few months before you move, you should keep track of all the physical subscriptions you get. From magazines to newspapers, you’ll want to either cancel them or update your address to have them delivered to your new home.
Whether you get your paychecks direct deposited or not, you should make sure you update your employer of your change of address as soon as you move. This way, you’ll get all communications and, most importantly, your tax documents when it comes time to file your taxes.
You may want to let your friends and family know what your new address is as well so you can keep in touch. Plus, this will ensure they will send invitations, holiday cards and any other correspondence to the right address.
There are several ways to inform your loved ones, but we recommend sending a postcard, email or text message to everyone, or even posting an announcement on your social media.
On top of the people and companies mentioned above, you can make sure to get your mail forwarded from companies you forgot to contact by updating your address with the U.S. Postal Service.
