NRG Financial Help

Financial Help

Energy Assistance

We want to give all people in our communities access to the electricity they need to run their homes and live their lives comfortably, regardless of their financial situation. Through our financial assistance program we do our best to help those in need. We also provide financial support for dedicated community cooling centers during the hot Texas Summer months where residents can cool off and stay healthy. Payment extensions and payment arrangements may also be available for qualified customers.

CARE Program

We all need electricity, but sometimes, making ends meet is difficult. The Community Assistance from Reliant Energy (CARE) program works with non-profit social service agencies to provide extra funds to customers who qualify for assistance with their electricity bill.

Customers who meet the agency criteria receive a one-time annual donation, funded by corporate contributions and customer donations, to help pay for electricity during difficult times. CARE is designed to help supplement what you are able to pay for electricity costs, not necessarily pay your entire electricity bill, and it can't be used to cover unreasonably high electricity consumption.

This program applies to those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Please contact the locations below for financial assistance. For more information about relief efforts, visit the Reliant Storm Center.

Those looking for assistance can call 211 within Texas or contact one of the social service agencies below to find out more.

Payment Extensions

Under certain conditions, we allow payment due date extensions. You must call 1-866-RELIANT to request an extension. If granted an extension, you may be allowed to pay up to 20 days after your original due date. However, you will be assessed a 5% late fee and, if you received a disconnection notice, a disconnection notice fee and disconnect recovery fee.

If you received a disconnection notice, you must pay the full balance due as listed on the notice before we can reconnect service or issue any extensions.

If you are on AutoPay, you must contact us at least three business days before your bill is due so we can deactivate your automatic payment.

If you are seriously ill, you may qualify for other options. Please call 1-866-RELIANT to discuss your situation with an agent.

Deferred Payment Plans

In certain situations, we can arrange a deferred payment plan which will allow you to pay the balance you owe in installments along with your regular monthly bill. If you received a disconnection notice for late payment, you must call us before the disconnection date written in your notice to be eligible for a deferred payment plan. Not all customers are eligible.

On a deferred payment plan, you are typically expected to pay 50% of what you owe up front. You will pay the rest in installments along with your bill over the next few months.

If you agree to a deferred payment plan, you will not be able to switch to another electricity provider until your final payment has posted, even if you cancel service with us. You must pay your balance in full.

If approved, your current balance for electricity and late charges can be paid off in a deferred payment schedule. Amounts you owe for protection plan products (e.g., Surge Protect, AC/Heat Protect), enrollment deposits, final bills and write-off amounts cannot be included. However, if you are seriously ill, you may qualify for other options. Please call 1-866-RELIANT to discuss your situation with an agent.
