25 ways to save energy outdoors

Few things are more refreshing than cooling off in a pool during the hottest days of the summer. Over time, however, the costs of owning a pool can add up. Electricity usage and maintenance can be significant. Take a look at our tips to learn how to make the most of your outdoor setup without using more energy than necessary. We also have helpful tips for your landscaping and outdoor accessories to help reduce energy usage and potentially increase savings on your electricity bill.

Swimming pools

These swimming pool maintenance tips will help you reduce the amount of energy your pool consumes.

  1. Clean your pool filter regularly. Clogged filters make your pool pump work harder and consume more energy.
  2. Use a pool cover to keep heat in and save up to 70% per year.1
  3. Avoid running your pool pump all day. Use an automatic timer on your pool pump to control electricity usage.
  4. Turn off the heater or heat pump when on vacation.
  5. Consider upgrading to a 5-star, energy-efficient pool pump.

Sprinklers

Programming your sprinklers to turn on and off as needed can be a convenient way to get your lawn the irrigation it needs. Follow these tips to make your sprinkler system more efficient.

  1. Water your lawn in the morning or late evening to avoid evaporation.
  2. Set up your sprinklers carefully. Make sure sprinklers do not spray the sidewalk or street to avoid wasting water.
  3. Take a break from the sprinklers. If you opt to water plants and grass by hose, you could significantly reduce how much water you use.

Landscape lighting

There are plenty of energy-saving landscape lighting options at nearly every hardware store. Consider these types of features when selecting lighting for your yard.

  1. Choose energy-saving light fixtures, such as low-voltage lighting, which illuminate paths with less energy.
  2. Consider solar-powered lights which convert the sunlight into usable energy.
  3. Install timers or sensors instead of leaving your lights on throughout the day.

Landscaping

Smart landscaping not only adds to the overall appeal of your home, but can also lower your energy bill.

  1. Keep plants trimmed and remove any obstructions near your AC equipment.
  2. Group plants with similar watering needs near each other to conserve water.
  3. Raise your lawn mowing height in the summer. Taller grass retains more water and reduces water loss through evaporation.
  4. Consider using manual tools when you can. For projects that allow it, avoid using tools that require electricity.
  5. Plant trees that are known for providing shade outdoors to help cool your home during the summer.
  6. Start your own compost pile. Compost piles allow you to use household recyclables and food waste to create fertilizer.
  7. Could a rain barrel be a good investment for your home? A rain barrel collects and stores water from your gutters to be used as needed for watering plants.
  8. Consider choosing plants that are adapted to the local climate. These plants require less maintenance which means less need for fertilizer and irrigation.

Roofing

Use these roofing tips to increase your energy savings.

  1. Insulate the roof from inside the attic to reduce the amount of air conditioning you need.
  2. Choose reflective coating when you re-roof to decrease heat buildup.
  3. Inspect your roof to check for leaks.

Outdoor Spaces

Consider these tips for reducing energy usage in your outdoor spaces.

  1. Energy-efficient outdoor appliances are a great way to save energy in your outdoor kitchen.
  2. Unplug outdoor appliances and electronics when they are not in use to conserve energy.
  3. Consider purchasing solar water pumps for any outdoor water features in your yard.
