If your AC is aging and you’re dealing with yet another repair, you might wonder… should I repair or replace the air conditioner? The truth is, it depends.

Sure, repairs can be less expensive than installing a new HVAC system. But the cost of an older heating and cooling system can add up with regular repairs and inefficient operation.

So, when do you make the call to replace rather than just repair your HVAC? For homeowners in Houston, we’ve put together a list of things to consider in this home improvement decision:

Repair your HVAC if it’s young, replace if it’s old

How old is your heating and cooling system? Hopefully, you have records noting when all the components in your HVAC system were installed. If not, there might be a sticker or a note from the installing technician on your system to indicate its approximate age.

Age is important because modern AC systems are built to last an average of 15 years.1 But, this kind of longevity is only achievable when you have properly maintained your system over time. So think back, have you had your regular AC tune ups and heating tune-ups?

If your air conditioner is nearing or over 12 years of age, you’re probably experiencing more and more problems with the unit. If your older unit is requiring AC maintenance every few months, it’s probably time to replace.

Does your HVAC unit run on R22? If, so replace it!

If your AC unit is using R-22 (also known as Freon®) as a refrigerant, you should replace it. The refrigerant type should be listed on the nameplate of the unit that is outside of your house.

Several years ago, it was determined that R22 is a contributor to depleting the earth’s ozone layer.2 As such, there are new regulations in place to reduce its production and use. In fact, R22 can’t be produced starting in 2020. Translation for Houston homeowners: if your AC repair requires R22 refrigerant, it’s probably going to be expensive. And, it’s only going to get more costly in the coming years. So if your system runs on R22, you should take a hard look at replacing your system.

Review your Energy Costs

Another consideration when choosing between repairing or replacing your air conditioner is the energy efficiency of the unit. Have you reviewed your energy bills lately? You might want to look at the last few summers to see if your energy costs have been rising. That’s a sign that your air conditioner is losing efficiency over time. A new air conditioner can drastically improve your energy efficiency which means a lower energy bill.

Air conditioner efficiency is measured by the seasonal energy efficiency ratio, typically abbreviated as SEER. In general, the higher the SEER rating, the more energy-efficient an AC unit will be. A higher SEER score for your AC unit will help to reduce your monthly energy bill while also lowering the carbon emissions associated with your home. Take a look at our SEER calculator to discover how much you could be saving.
