Take these steps after the storm

If you were impacted by recent severe weather, use these tips to safely return to normal.  

  • Ensure electronics and appliances are working properly; they can be unsafe if damaged
  • Avoid downed power lines and immediately report them to your local utility
  • Turn on major electronics one at a time to avoid power surges
  • Don’t use matches or lighters in case of natural gas leaks nearby
  • Do not enter areas with standing water until power has been confirmed off or restored safely
  • Have water-damaged appliances, electronics or outlets inspected by a professional before use
  • Monitor for unusual smells, sounds or tripped breakers, and shut the power off if something seems unsafe

Report an outage

Reliant is your electricity supplier, but your utility company maintains the poles and lines that deliver it to your home. If your power is out, you can track and report power outages to your local utility company.

Returning home after an evacuation

Evacuating in an emergency is nerve-wracking. It can leave you fearful about what you may find when you return. Keep this information in mind.

  • Wait for the OK. While you may be anxious to get back and assess the damage, wait for authorities to declare the area safe.
  • Practice water safety. Follow water-boiling notices, assume standing water is contaminated, and remember that electricity and water don't mix.
  • Check for gas leaks. If you suspect a gas leak, leave the area immediately, and contact your gas company.
  • Don’t get shocked. Never use outlets, tools, appliances or electronics that are wet or have been exposed to water.
  • When in doubt, throw it out. Discard all perishable food exposed to temperatures of 40 degrees or higher for 2 hours or more.
  • Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Never use generators, charcoal grills or fossil fuels indoors.
