These days, working from home, at least part of the time, is the norm for a lot of us. And that means relocating farther from the workplace is becoming more common, too. If you're considering a move to make the most of your new working world, here are a few factors to consider:

First things first: How do you want to live?

When it comes to moving, consider your values and where you feel you and your family would be most comfortable. If you're looking to relocate closer to nature, you can check into rural areas or urban neighborhoods near green spaces and nature preserves. If staying close to family is important to you, look into an area that allows you to easily visit them. Are bigger cities more your speed? Think about setting a minimum population requirement and starting your research from there.

Deciding where to live isn’t just about location, however. There are a few other important factors that may need to be considered before you start packing your bags.

Get a handle on your financial situation

Everyone has monthly expenses outside of utility bills, whether it’s school loans, car payments or childcare. Consider knowing in advance how much money you’ll need to set aside for your expenses each month, and ensuring that you can realistically build your move into your budget.

How will you spend your time?

Think about how you prefer to spend your time outside of work. Maybe you like taking classes, being active, exploring the outdoors or enjoying the nightlife. Have a look at whether the area you’d like to move to will be able to provide easy access to the things you enjoy.

Housing costs

Do some research into housing costs for the areas that interest you. Between rent, mortgage payments, property taxes and commuting costs ,these figures will vary depending on which part of the country you live in. Some areas are less expensive than others; parts of the South that include North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi are among the areas with lower costs of living. Housing costs will vary depending on which part of the country you live in. Some areas are more expensive than others, and the difference can add up. You might also be mindful of monthly utility prices you'll pay, which can include:

  • Electricity
  • Gas
  • Water
  • Trash and/or recycling services
  • Internet
  • Cable television

Moving costs

Moving can become an expensive project, so consider hiring movers who fit your budget or even just asking friends to help. Whether you're staying close to where you currently live or moving farther away, saving money is possible with the right amount of preparation.

Schools for kids

If you have children, chances are you’ll want them to have the best education wherever you decide to move. You may want to research schools in the areas you’re considering to ensure that they meet your family’s requirements when it comes to having the best learning opportunities for your kids.

Transportation and traffic

Whether or not you’re planning on commuting, traffic can be a hassle depending on where you decide to live. It's a solid idea to factor in the infrastructure of the areas that interest you, including the highways and available commuter transportation. You can decide your ideal commute time and use this to eliminate locations that are too far flung.

Make your move a success

Once you've moved into your new home, you can find ways to become part of the local community. Here are a few things you might try:

  • Introduce yourself to your neighbors
  • Explore the local parks and outdoor areas
  • Take classes that interest you
  • Volunteer in your community

Finding the right place to live can be overwhelming, but keeping these key factors in mind can give you a solid foundation when it comes to choosing where to live, and being confident when making your next move.
