Why am I reporting my outage to my TDSP?

Your TDSP (or utility) delivers electricity to your home

While we supply your electricity, your TDSP delivers it. The electricity you purchase from Reliant — or any retail provider — is delivered to your home by the infrastructure, including wires, transformers, and poles, maintained by your TDSP. That’s why it’s important to report power outages or downed lines to them so they can help resolve the issue.

To report a power outage near you, select your Transmission and Distribution Service Provider (TDSP) from the menu above.

Select one of the options for reporting: report an outage online or call your TDSP.

Reliant Energy provides your energy but does not deliver the electricity to your home. Electricity delivery is done by your TDSP, commonly called your utility company. If you are in an area with downed power lines, immediately leave the area if possible and call your TDSP. Downed power lines are dangerous and should be handled by professionals. You can find the number to local TDSP’s above.

The most common cause for power outages in the U.S. is storms, including rain, heat, ice and snowstorms. High winds can knock trees into power lines while lightning during a heat storm can strike crucial electrical equipment. Ice and snow freeze power lines, making them heavy and causing added tension on the lines.

There are three important tips to remember during a blackout:

  1. Keep refrigerators and freezers closed to keep food from perishing.

  2. If the heat or cold is extreme, go to another place with power for warmth or cooling. Don’t forget to check up on your neighbors!

  3. Power outages and blackouts may not last very long, but in case they last for a day or two, be prepared. It’s always a good idea to have non-perishable food in the house along with water bottles for emergencies. Batteries and battery-powered equipment, like flashlights, will also be extremely useful during an electricity outage for light and other uses.
