HARNESSING THE POWER OF WIND ONSHORE AND OFF
NRG Energy’s three wind farms in Texas—Sherbino, Elbow Creek and Langford—generate close to 350 megawatts (MW) of electricity. Strategic partnerships with companies like Enel Green Power enable us to better support wind energy initiatives. Our offshore wind subsidiary, NRG Bluewater Wind, has a power purchase agreement with Delmarva Power & Light and is pursuing other projects in the northeast region to give NRG Energy first-mover advantage in this blossoming renewables market.
A BRIGHTER FUTURE IN RENEWABLE ENERGY
NRG Energy’s solar strategy is focused on using additional PV fields as well as solar thermal technology to develop hundreds of megawatts of emission-free solar power across the southwestern United States.
NUCLEAR ENERGY REVISITED
In 2008, in conjunction with Toshiba Corp., NRG Energy established Nuclear Innovation North America, LLC, a subsidiary dedicated to new advanced-design nuclear projects in select markets across North America. Read more about NRG Energy’s prominent role in the nuclear power renaissance.
TURNING WASTE INTO ENERGY
NRG Energy is committed to furthering the development of biomass energy. Read about our 30 MW project at the Montville Generating Station in Connecticut and the pilot project at the Big Cajun II Plant in Louisiana. Learn more about NRG’s commitment to renewable energy sources.
NRG ACQUIRES LARGEST SOLAR POWER PLANT IN CALIFORNIA

NRG Energy has acquired its first solar generation facility and the largest utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) solar project in California, the 21 megawatt (MW) Blythe Solar Project. The site was acquired from First Solar, Inc., a leader in advanced and efficient thin film solar technology focused on manufacturing solar panels and developing solar projects for utilities and generators to operate.
Located in Riverside County in southeastern California, approximately 200 miles east of Los Angeles, the solar PV field will provide electricity to Southern California Edison (SCE) under a 20-year power purchase agreement. At peak capacity, the site will be able to meet the needs of almost 17,000 homes.
"Successfully transitioning to a low- and no-carbon energy environment means using renewable resources that are located where the demand is," said David Crane, President and Chief Executive Officer of NRG Energy. "Partnering with companies like First Solar to add large-scale PV solar to the fleet of solar thermal power plants we are developing with eSolar positions us to lead the industry in the commercial implementation of solar technologies where America can best reap the benefits of this emission-free power."

WIND PLANS HELP OFFSET CARBON FOOTPRINT
With 1.5 billion people in the world still living in darkness, energy conservation has become everyone’s responsibility—and it doesn’t take much effort to make a big difference. For instance, using an electricity plan with 20 percent wind energy for one year can offset your carbon footprint by 200 pounds each month; counterbalance the CO2 produced from driving your car; and reduce carbon emissions as much as recycling 3,600 glass jars, 5,520 aluminum cans and 920 pounds of steel.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) 20% Wind Energy by 2030 Technical Report calculated that obtaining 20 percent of our electricity from wind energy by 2030 would cut cumulative CO2 emissions by more than 7.6 billion tons.
Reliant makes it easy to offset your carbon footprint when you sign up for one of our Wind or term plans. Both the Secure-12 with 20% Wind and the Secure-12 100% Texas Wind offer a fixed low rate and an opportunity to do something good for the environment.
- Small changes in your habits can lead to big reductions in energy usage
- You can offset your carbon footprint with a Wind plan from Reliant
