Reliant's vision is to be the best-positioned, most-trusted choice for electricity in competitive markets. In earning this trust, we recognize our responsibility not only to provide reliable, affordable power to customers but also to be a steward for the environment.
We own or operate more than 14,000 megawatts of generating capacity in nine states across the United States. We also provide power to more than 1.7 million homes and businesses. Our operations are governed by a wide array of federal, state and local environmental regulations. While these regulations establish the first level of corporate responsibility, we often achieve more than what the law mandates. To do this, we work hard to listen and respond to local concerns, to improve the quality of life in the communities where we live and work.
Building on a history of reducing emissions, Reliant earned the Pennsylvania Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence in 2004. Our state-of-the-art Seward Generating Station burns low-grade “waste” coal for fuel, resulting in improved air and water quality in the region. In July 2006, we announced plans to invest $625 million through 2011 to reduce nitrogen oxide, mercury and sulfur dioxide emissions at our plants. In addition, we are actively working to offset carbon dioxide production through reforestation projects in the southern United States that will not only provide sinks for carbon but also restore vital habitats essential to wildlife.
As a supporter of renewable energy and one of the largest purchasers of Renewable Energy Credits in Texas, Reliant fully supported Senate Bill 20, legislation that more than doubled the required mandate for renewable energy in Texas. We were one of the first, and continue to be one of the few retail companies in Texas that offer renewable energy products generated from 100 percent pollution-free wind power. We also partner with many of our largest clients to meet their corporate environmental goals through unique environmentally friendly offers.
In addition to wind power, Reliant provides power from several other renewable sources, including solar energy and methane gas from landfills. We are encouraged by the growing interest and investment in new renewable power technologies, and believe more options will become viable for large scale use in the coming years.
To perform as a trusted energy provider, we believe it’s important to help customers use energy more efficiently. In 2002, we launched a web-based, energy-saving center and home energy check-up tool, which has had more than 100,000 visits annually. We also partner with community organizations to help low-income and elderly residents lower their energy usage through home improvements and energy efficiency upgrades. In 2005, we established our Home Energy Advisors Team to provide personal consulting and energy-efficiency resources in both English and Spanish. And, the Reliant Energy Compact With Texas urges Texans to make a simple home energy efficiency improvement: a switch from incandescent bulbs to more energy efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). In 2007, we were named as one of the top five companies in the country, and number one in Texas, in driving the installation of CFLs under the 2007 ENERGY STAR® Change a Light, Change the World Campaign.
This enhanced environmental section of our site was designed to provide you with more information on our environmental stewardship, including the award-winning Environmental Partners program. In particular, I would direct your attention to our Statement of Principles, which defines how we do business.
We're proud of our record of environmental action and community involvement through the years – and we will continue to work to earn your trust through all that we do.
Sincerely,
