In 1998, we made our first acquisition of power generation facilities and have increased our aggregate net generating capacity through a combination of acquisitions, development of new generating projects and contracted capacity. Total capacity operating is more than 15,000 megawatts.
Reliant's power generation assets are located in key power consuming regions of the country and include a combination of base load, intermediate and peaking units. These assets use coal, natural gas, oil or are dual-fueled in generating electricity. This diverse portfolio supplies energy to meet the needs of customers ranging from residential consumers to commercial, industrial and governmental customers.
In addition to our generation capability, the Reliant Commercial Operations Team optimizes the production of electricity through commercial activities across a range of fuels and power-related products in various markets within the United States. With this commercial capability, Reliant has the flexibility to deliver electricity from the most economic source by either generating or procuring electric energy. Capacity and ancillary services are also provided to meet the needs of our wholesale customers.
