Unpacking tips

You made it through some of the most difficult parts of moving: planning, clearing and packing. Now it’s time to unpack. This may seem overwhelming, but it can be less daunting by staying organized, delegating when you can and giving yourself enough time.

Some Notes Before You Begin

Before you begin the bustle of unpacking, it could be helpful to formulate a plan that will make the unpacking process more organized and less stressful. Here are some helpful tips to consider when planning how best to unpack:

  • As you unpack, flatten boxes and throw away packing materials. You’ll reduce clutter, which will allow you to be more organized.
  • Give your kids activities to stay busy. Let them explore the new house or give them large boxes to make tunnels in the back yard.
  • Take frequent breaks. Give yourself plenty of time, and remember that it doesn’t have to be finished right away.
  • Don’t be afraid to throw things away. If you find items you don’t use, it’s better to throw them out now.

First Day of Unpacking

The first day of unpacking your belongings can be exciting and also overwhelming. Here are some tips to make it easier to strategically unpack boxes and furniture:

  • Unload and place the large furniture first. Once these pieces are in place, you’ll start to see where other items can fit.
  • Hook up the appliances you need now, such as the dishwasher, refrigerator, washer and dryer.
  • Locate and unload your survival box and suitcases with short-term essentials. This will ensure everyone can unpack in comfort.
  • Once you have all of your boxes unloaded and placed in the appropriate rooms, unpack a few essential boxes and then rotate to the next room. This works better than working on one room completely at a time.
  • Start with the kitchen by unloading perishables into the refrigerator and food into the pantry. This will help you be prepared for your hungry helpers.
  • After the kitchen, unpack a few boxes in the bathroom. Get towels on the rack, soap by the sink and toilet paper on the roll.
  • Make up the beds with sheets and pillows. Everyone will be glad you did when this long day is over.
