Moving with small children

You’ve got your hands full, as people say, with small kids. Play dates, snacks, doctor visits, nap time and carpooling all make for a busy time as a parent. Now, you’ve decided to move, which is one of the most stressful events in one’s life. How will you make it work? Take a deep breath and review a few hints to make your move as smooth as possible.

Take it one day at a time. Look at each day and make a list of what you want to accomplish, and be sure to include some play and rest time. As the day progresses, check things off as you get them done.
Be prepared. Need to go house hunting with your kids? Pack a bag with snacks, bottles/drinks, small toys, diapers, wipes and an extra change of clothes.
Set some boundaries. When selling your home, give the realtor your rules. For example, you need to be called one hour in advance of showings, and they end at 7:15 p.m. for bedtime.
Let the schedule bend. If your kids are on a strict schedule, the moving process may be difficult. Do your best to plan inspections and showings around their schedule, but expect an occasional deviation.
Put the realtor to work. It’s inspection day at the new home and your baby’s sick. Ask your agent to go on your behalf and check in often to see how it’s going.
Clean as you go. Do a thorough weekly cleaning. Then, go through the house on a daily basis to straighten up and have the kids do their part by keeping their rooms clean.
Adjust your expectations when packing. Be realistic about how much packing you can get done in one day. Set daily attainable goals for yourself and pat yourself on the back when you reach them.
Make arrangements for childcare. For some of the most intense days, such as the date of the home inspection and closing day, arrange to have coverage.
Again, breathe. When you feel stressed, close your eyes and take a deep breath. This will relieve some stress and boost your energy.
