Room air conditioners

Designed to cool specific rooms, window units can save energy by allowing you to close other rooms off and limit the areas being cooled.

Bigger is not better when it comes to sizing room air conditioners. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when choosing the cooling capacity. A unit that is too large will cool the room too quickly and not allow enough time to remove the latent heat and humidity in the room. An undersized unit will run continuously, without properly cooling the room. The minimum allowable Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) for a room air conditioning system is 8.0 EER; however, we recommend an EER of 10.0 or higher.

If your room air conditioning unit is 15 years old or more, we suggest replacing it with a newer, more efficient model. Before making a purchase, remember to check your current electrical supply. Room air conditioning units require either 115-volt or 230-volt input. Typical room electrical receptacles are 115 volt. If you purchase a room air conditioner with 230 volt, you’ll need to make sure you have the proper electrical requirements.

Always change dirty filters on a regular basis and follow manufacturer’s recommendations regarding proper service and maintenance.

Low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators

Low-flow showerheads save energy and can cut hot water usage in half. Federal efficiency guidelines require all new showerheads to provide no more than 2.5 gallons of water per minute. Older showerheads can deliver water at more than 5 gallons per minute.

To determine how much water your showerhead uses, get a one-gallon container and time how many seconds it takes to fill it. If it takes less than 20 seconds, your shower head should be replaced with a more energy-efficient model.
