Washing machines and dryers

Washing machines and dryers combined account for up to 10% of your overall energy usage.

Go to:
Washing machines
  • Most of the energy consumed by washing machines is for heating the water. To conserve energy, use cold water for the wash and rinse cycles.
  • Choose washers with a number of wash/rinse temperature cycles and water capacities.
  • Run large loads instead of several small ones to cut down on energy costs, but avoid overloading.
  • Choose washers with high spin speeds to reduce drying time.
  • Front-load washers use less water and up to 2/3 less energy than top-loading models.

Dryers
  • Gas dryers cost less to operate than electric models.
  • Dry two or more loads in a row so that you can take advantage of the heat that builds up during the first load.
  • Dryers with an automatic shut off feature can save energy and prolong the life of clothing.
  • Dryers should be vented to the outdoors, and seals to the vent connection should be tight.
  • Do not leave the dryer on longer than necessary. Over drying clothes wears down fabric and wastes energy.
  • Clean the dryer’s filter after each use to reduce drying time.
  • Dry heavy and light fabrics separately. This way, all clothes in the load will be dry at the same time.
