Environment

As an NRG company, Reliant Energy and its employees truly care about our planet. We partner with many organizations to reduce our collective impact on the environment by promoting broader use of electric vehicles, offering renewable energy options and promoting energy efficiency.

HERE'S WHAT NRG IS DOING TO ENSURE A CLEANER ENERGY FUTURE

Using Recycled Paper Products

Throughout 2010, Reliant Energy is converting bills, deposit notices and other billing documents to recycled paper products that contain 10% post-consumer-waste (PCW). Converting to 10% PCW paper products avoids consuming about three tons of forest products per month, which saves about 72 trees. Use of PCW products also

  • Produces less pollution
  • Reduces use of toxic chemicals
  • Reduces fresh water usage
  • Saves 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space

Harnessing the Power of Wind—Onshore and Off

NRG's three wind farms in Texas—Sherbino, Elbow Creek and Langford—generate close to 350 megawatts (MW) of electricity. Strategic partnerships with companies like Enel Green Power enable us to better support wind energy initiatives. We entered the offshore wind arena with the acquisition of Bluewater Wind.

A Brighter Future in Renewable Energy

Together with First Solar, Inc., NRG recently started commercial operation for the largest photovoltaic (PV) solar project in California. We’re also partnering with PG&E and eSolar in a joint effort that will provide up to 500 MW across the Southwestern United States in the long term.

Nuclear Energy Revisited

In 2008, in conjunction with Toshiba Corp., NRG established Nuclear Innovation North America, LLC, a subsidiary dedicated to new advanced-design nuclear projects in select markets across North America. Read more about NRG’s prominent role in the nuclear power renaissance.

Turning Waste Into Energy

NRG is committed to furthering the development of biomass energy. Read about our 30 MW project at the Montville Generating Station in Connecticut and the pilot project at the Big Cajun II Plant in Louisiana. Learn more about NRG’s commitment to renewable energy sources.

The Electrification of Houston and the Nation

NRG is promoting broader use of electric vehicles (EVs). To achieve this, Reliant Energy has partnered with Nissan Motor Co. and the City of Houston for the Power of the Plug-In program to make it easier for consumers to switch to EVs. Hear NRG CEO David Crane speak about the Nissan partnership.
